Diets and Acne : Related?
66
Acne: How much do you hate it?
So can diets and acne really be related? Let's see.
Have you also had acne for as long as you remember, or at least get it randomly?I know I have, for about 10 years now in fact, and it's really a life changer. In a negative way that is. I would like to go more into depth with how proper nutrition has helped me clear most of my acne, versus regular creams and antibiotics -
Number One Most Important Thing:
You must drink Water, and a lot of it. People underestimate just how important this can be to your health. Not only can this help your acne problems, it will improve your overall well-being.Water is an amazing substance - It will wash out all of the dirty toxins you may have acquired in your body, almost like taking an internal shower. The more you drink, the better (don't overdo it of course). I went from drinking soda's all day, and maybe a cup or 2 of water, to regularily drinking 6-8 bottles a day, and it has made a world of difference. Not only does it wash you out, it will make your skin supple and hydrated, therefore making it harder for acne to surface.
Benefits of Green Tea
Now green tea is the only other thing I drink other than water, and there's a very important reason for that. It is known worldwide, to be an amazingly rich source of antioxidants: another way of flushing out your internal toxins(see how important that word is becoming?)
Green Tea is extremely high in ECGG(epigallocatechin gallate.) This is an antioxidant, that is said to have similar effects to Vitamin E, but is much more potent. A high intake of this can soothe your skin, hydrate you, and cleanses you like nothing else (And hey, green tea is even known to be a metabolic enhancer for those with weight issues - free bonus!)
It,along with water, has really helped me progress through my clearing regimen. Just a few weeks after I started drinking it, I noticed that inflammation of my acne lessened fast, and the redness had gone back to my normal skin color. I also take the juice from the tea bags, and use it as a one time face wash - I highly recommend this, as it is another direct way to get all of the tea's ingredients into you.
Omega 3's and Omega 6's - What in the world are they?
Now this is something you may not have heard of before, but it's very important - As I will now explain. Omega 3 and 6 Fatty Acids are found naturally in all the foods that you eat, and nothing is wrong with either of them. In fact, they are good for you: so why worry?
Here is the problem - a correct balance of these two can result in very healthy life benefits, and clear skin. The issue is, especially here in the western hemisphere, almost nobody gets a good balance of the two. An essential ratio would be 1:1, or 2:1 maybe. What is it here in the U.S. you may wonder? In many peoples cases, it is a 20:1 ratio of Omega 6 to Omega 3. That is a ridiculous number , and the effects it can have are very detrimental.
However, you may still wonder, what exactly do these two fatty acids do? Without going too far into depth, they control your body and the food intake you have, regulating your bodily functions. Eating Omega 3 rich foods have many benefits, such as:
- reducing inflammation in your body(acne)
- keep your blood from clotting excessively(acne)
- lowers the amount of fats and oils in your bloodstream(acne...see what I mean?)
Omega 6's also have positive effects for you, but with the way that diets have changed lately, the unhealthy ratio of 6's to 3's can prove to spark acne in a rageful way. So, how to balance it in your diet?
Here's my recommendation for Omega 3 rich foods, and the regimen I have used for myself -
- Fish are very high in Omega 3's, all types of them. Some higher than others, but as long as you get some good fish intake, you shouldn't worry too much about the type.
- Walnuts - they are the Nut with the highest amount of Omega 3's, and they taste good on top of that! I try to eat a small bowl of them at least once every other day.
- Select Vegetables - Here are the best ones in my opinion to try to eat at least once a day : soybeans, cauliflower, lettuce, cabbage, broccoli, and green beans!!
- Fruits! - You can't forget fruits : The Berry Family has a high content of it - Blackberries, strawberries, blueberries, and even raspberries. Lemons are also a nice secondary source.
For Omega 6's, they are much easier to get, so getting these in your diet won't be an issue: Soy oil, corn oil, and many other common oils used for cooking are spiked very high in Omega 6's. This results in almost everything to have some in it.
Processed Foods..Stop.
Lastly, I am very glad that this is something I caught on to personally a long time ago.
Processed foods, they are delicious, fast and easy to make, and cheap. Easy to fit into your diet. The perfect food right? It is because of those factors, that so many people rely on them as a quick breakfast or even full dinner meal. However, they are downright horrible for the body.
They are filled to the brim with excessive ingredients we don't need. Seriously, have you ever looked at the list of ingredients? Half of the words are longer than this whole sentence I just typed! A big issue with them is all of the oils you'll find, and as we just talked about, these heighten your levels of Omega 6's. Also, there are chemicals in there used to preserve the food, that can only harm our bodies. To the point of fatal harm? No not at all. However, acne is something I've noticed they are good at producing.
So what exactly are processed foods? You'll see them anywhere, in any grocery shop. Especially in the frozen aisle's: Hot Pockets, Burrito's, Cheese-sticks, Etc. They "look" like what they are called, but inside, they are just an internal bomb waiting to happen. When I cut these out of my daily meals and changed my diet completely, I noticed my severe acne quickly lessened to moderate acne - which is a godsend to some people. I took note and have tried my best to avoid them completely ever since, something I wish more people would do.
Try some of this!
So in conclusion , the point I'm making is hopefully easily seen by reading this. Diet does play a big role in clearing up your skin. So try some of these ideas out guys and gals. Mix and match, or do all of them at once. I know it is hard to stop old habits, and maybe you are addicted to soda, or eat too much pizza, or anything like that. I was too, for years. But if you try slowly, you can and will see results right before your eyes. Nothing feels better than to see your acne begin to vanish, and never even have to touch your face with those topicals that just dry you out.It was one of the best feeling's I've ever had at least.
I have just offered a brief overview of some major topics that have much more depth to them, but it is still enough to get you thinking in the right idea.
Here is a link to a website that has a bunch of great info on Acne and different ways to treat it.
So I hope that this will benefit somebody, let me know how your results turn out guys, and what you think on these few ideas?
I will be posting more in depth guides to some other treatments I have found soon.
Until next time!

Hello Hubbswriter. What a very informative article. I have never really had an acne problem, but both my young adult daughters do. I am going to pass this hub onto them.
Whether acne prone or not, all that you mentioned are very beneficial for the body.

Hi, this is really good information, I had acne for years as a child, in the end the answer was something called Sulphur and Salycilic acid cream, it worked a treat, but drinking loads of water really helped too, and I did try and cut out a lot of junk food, rated up! cheers nell
